Encouraging Debut for Pyscho Sister!

Her start was simply horrible on the sloppy racetrack. As the horses broke from the gate, I spotted Pyscho Sister doing her impression of a “Flintstones’ start (where Fred’s feet are moving but nothing else). As each of the horses vied for positions, Pyscho Sister’s spotted the field several lengths and was instantly 10 lengths behind the leaders.

Bad Start take 2

Pyscho Sister spotting the field several lengths

My first reaction was “Oh no, not her day today’. However, Pyscho Sister didn’t yield so easily. She gained her footing and started to move better on the backstretch but still offering 9 lengths as they entered the turn on the speed favoring track. She accelerated impressively around the turn but due to the congestion just ahead of her, she navigated outside (5-wide) and gave up additional ground.

After the turn, she passed a few tiring horses, switched leads and dug in for the stretch run. She gamely fought past another few horses and appeared destined to finish fifth. Most impressively, considering her effort just to get back in the race, she dug in even deeper, enough to bob her head at the wire for an impressive third place finish, just 3 lengths behind the winner and 1 ½ behind the second place finisher.  In finishing third, she passed seven horses, including all of the other first time starters.

Enjoying a post-race meal!

Her effort was encouraging. She returned to the barn and appeared in good spirits as she started to eat up her post-race dinner from her stall. We’ll monitor her post-race condition closely over the next few days as standard procedure and hopefully point towards a return to the track in roughly 3 or 4 weeks. Given her debut performance, I’m not expecting to see long odds of 13-1 the next time around.
